Mellel is a word processor meticulously crafted to serve the needs of academics, technical writers, scholars, and students. Its reputation for power, stability, and reliability makes it an excellent tool for crafting everything from intricate documents to straightforward texts.

Beyond the standard and advanced features one might expect from a word processor—such as character and paragraph formatting, tables, headers and footers, and multi-column layouts—Mellel distinguishes itself with unique functionalities. These include Auto-titles and Outline for better document structure, multiple note streams for enhanced annotation, customizable styles, and, notably on the iPad, bibliography scanning. This last feature enables users to generate documents with citations and bibliographies that adhere to publication standards (a Premium subscription and Bookends for iOS are required to utilize this functionality).

The mobile version of Mellel offers seamless integration with its Mac counterpart. Users can easily view and edit documents across devices without disruption; however, some editing features are not yet fully available on the iPad.

The formatting capabilities are extensive:
